Matlock Bath Pavilion Group Meeting

We had a very successful meeting last night at the Temple Hotel. There were two new faces at the committee, Laura Smith and Les Small.

Laura brings a Heritage skill as she has worked for the Mining Museum for seven years, she does a lot of Grant Applications for the Museum and therefore brings useful experience of this. She also has a Masters Degree in Heritage Education. Her skills will help us enormously with the many applications that we will make.

Les has spent much of his working life in the Buildings Services Industry, organising, estimating and supervising the work needed to run a building. He is starting with our Mechanical & Electrical budget to verify that it is adequate for what we need to do with it.

We concentrated on organising ourselves to start making applications for funding to renovate the building. We also agreed a Maintenance Plan for the building, to ensure that we have done enough to avoid any further deterioration in the Grand Pavilion.

Gerry Kreibich Extravaganza

Gerry put on a hell-of-a-show on Friday night in the Temple Hotel. We got an audience of over 50 members. They were bowled over by his impersonations of Ray Charles, Mozart, a Scotsman and a French accordion player, wigs and all!
He then did the Banana Boat Song; complete with audience participation. His audience also joined in a Morris Dance compared by Gerry. This was followed by the Pavilion Psalm according to Gregor. Whatever next!
During the evening membership passed 950; 50 more than a month ago, not bad for a winter month!

At Last we have a Lease

The Grand Pavilion has a new landlord. A 3-year lease, for “The Pav” in Matlock Bath, has been signed between local charity, The Grand Pavilion Ltd, and Derbyshire Dales District Council. With this lease comes an option to buy the building, for a pound!

After signing the lease charity Chairman, Gregor Macgregor said; “I am so pleased to see us move to the next stage of the plan, which I laid out two years ago. At that time we were seen as just a group of concerned locals, trying to get a futile campaign off the ground. Now we are a registered charity with a lease on the building we want to save.

“Agreeing this lease would have been much more difficult, without Lovedays Solicitors offering their services for free. The Bank Road firm has enabled us to progress, without having spent most of our savings on solicitor’s fees. By gift aiding their support, they have also given us a big boost towards ‘Matched Funding’.

“At the end of the three-year-lease there will be a decision as to whether it will be continued, terminated or the building sold for a pound! The decision will be based on how successful our charity is in raising Grant Aid for the renovation work.”

Grant application chief, Charles Beresford, said; “now we have a lease, we can start seriously applying for the money we need to renovate the building. We have already started talking to The Heritage Lottery Fund and will be submitting our first application to them immediately.

“This will soon be followed by lots of other applications. We anticipate that there will be funding coming from a number of sources. This makes for a lot of work!”

Director, David Mowle, described the state of the building; “this building needs a lot of work. There is water coming in at two points, damaging the plasterwork in the main hall. The Council has agreed to do this work.

“The next most threatening immediate problem is the state of the windows. There is also a lot of patching and replacing of the outside rendering required.

Dave, who is the charity’s building’s officer, warned; “if we do not sort these problems out quickly, we may need to replace all the windows and most of the plaster. All the help that we can get from supporters of our campaign will be much appreciated.”

Director Andie Brazewell is Chairman of the Friends of the Grand Pavilion. He welcomed the news. “This is a big boost for us. We hope that it will allow us to significantly raise the number of “friends” group members from the 937 that we already have. People will see that they are joining a group with a viable and achievable plan

“It also means that the events, which we are organising each month for members and guests, will get greater support. People will be even more enthusiastic about coming, as they can see that we now have a realistic chance of success.”

As to finance; Treasurer, Nick Whitehead, made it clear that the group is solvent and will be able to cover its costs. “Thanks to the generosity of members of the “Friends” group, and Lovedays help, we were able to pay the insurance bill for the first year; on day one.

“We will receive rents from the tenants in the building. That allows us to cover the costs of getting the building maintenance problems sorted out. We will then start to build up a fund to cover any major problem if it arises; e.g. with the roof.

“Finally, I would like to encourage everyone to use the Cash Machine in the Pavilion. Each use will give us increased rent, for having the machine on the wall outside the old Tourist Information Office. If we can average 83 withdrawals a day, we will get a rent of 20p per withdrawal! This costs the public nothing; the banks pay Note Machine Ltd and we get our share; as rent.”

An Evening with Simon Groom

<<2012 January 14th Simon Groom 002.jpg>>
A full audience was on hand to hear Simon Groom introduce three of his
short documentaries. 60 members of the "Friends of the Grand Pavilion"
had pre-booked and others arrived on the night. The films shown were his
famous "Full Circle: Saving Derby's Roundhouse" and two other short
films made for the BBC's Inside Out series.
Added in were his anecdotes, including how he ended up eating dinner
with Ken Russell; because Ken was the only other person eating alone in
the fully booked restaurant! This ended up with Simon making a
documentary on the great film producer; who died two months ago.
Afterwards the audience voted unanimously to invite Simon back to
present this documentary and create another super evening in the near
future. Maureen and Philip Sandler said " We found the films fascinating
and Simon Groom a great raconteur."
At the meeting I was able to announce that, with nine new members that
day, membership had reached 900!

Cressbrook Film Club

I took the stand to see Cressbrook Film Club and watched Potiche. The film describes the story of when Catherine Deneuve's husband is taken hostage by his striking employees she, a trophy wife, takes the reins of the family business and proves to be a remarkably effective leader.

I spoke briefly to the audience about the Pavilion and received a lit of interest as I talked to individuals later. I hope a few members coming back to us in the coming days.

60 people have reserved places for the Simon Groom event, so if you want to come; arrive early to avoid disappointment!

I have now got more than a dozen people who have said that they will
help deliver the villages around Matlock and have been supplying people
with leaflets.
With their help we should be able to get our message out to:
- Wensley
- Darley Bridge
- Darley Dale
- Two Dales
- Hackney
- Bakewell
- Swanwick
- Crich
- Holloway
- Ambergate
- Belper
- Duffield
Hopefully more people will come forward and offer to deliver a bit of
their village. This way we can increase the Friends Group membership and
contact people who we are unable to visit in person.
Membership now stands at 887 and each week we get closer to the golden
thousand! It is slower at this time of year, as it is more difficult to
get out and visit people when it is dark do early.

FW: Simon Groom

I have just sent out the attached flyer to members and already we have 10 reservations!

Simon will introduce 2 short films which he made for BBC1’s ‘Inside Out’:

‘Bucking Mad’: the story of an English Rodeo rider and ‘A Spinner of Tales’: a profile of local author Alison Uttley.

These will be followed by:

“Full Circle: Saving Derby’s Roundhouse”. This tells the remarkable story of how the world’s oldest Roundhouse was rescued. The Grade 2* listed building had stood derelict for 20 years, but was transformed into a £50 million College.

New Year Donations

I have just opened the post and there are no less than 7 new members. One envelope was from a lovely old couple in Derby. They have given a total membership and donation of £200!

This will really help us to get on with the repairs work that will be needed after we take on the lease.

A lovely New Year surprise!

How about the envelope above! I hope the name does not catch on!

Temple Mine

<<2011 December 25th Christmas 011.jpg>> It is a lead mining tradition,
to light candles on the final day of work, to wish good luck for the
future year.
I got invited to go down the mine and do this; with the crew from the
Mining Museum.
So good luck for 2012 for the Grand Pavilion!
