Pollyanna Pickering Print Winner!

We have a winner for our Derbyshire Open Arts Catalogue Raffle. Everyone who bought a catalogue had a number on it and these were put into a “random number generator” and we came up with a winner when it was drawn at the Storytelling Café evening on Friday.

The winners were Sandra and Tony Forsyth from Matlock Bath (photographed with the picture), so another “Home Win”!

Thanks again to Pollyanna Pickering for her kind gift of the picture.

Celebrating Cromford

A fantastic weekend was had in Celebrating Cromford on both the Saturday and the Sunday.

The weather was marginal, but it only really rained once and then not for long. There was a good write-up in Matlock People.

I was there with the stand (pictured) and signed up 21 new members, which takes us close to 1,300 members to date. The wind was our big problem on the Saturday blowing over the stand once and causing many difficulties at other times.

Right Royal Review

Matlock Musical Theatre's Right Royal Review was a fantastic success! They appeared in Matlock & Calver last weekend and Bakewell & Wirksworth, to full houses each time. It was a great evening using of the Queen's 60 years on the throne as a theme. This worked well and became the centrepiece for a number of songs from both musicals and pop history including Bohemian Rhapsody (pictured) and a "Phantom of the Opera" medially.

As you would expect I was there with the stall and generated some interest but no members on the night, We were too busy watching the show!

Storytelling Cafe

Trolls, Sailors, African Kings, Dwarfs in the middle of woods and lots of other caricatures made an evening of fun at the Storytelling Café.

We produced a small but enthusiastic audience for the evening in the Temple Hotel.

We drew the Pollyanna Pickering raffle prize on the night and it was won by Sandra & Tony Forsyth so congratulations to them!

We also appeared at the Holymoorside Festival with the stand, thanks to paul chandler for organising this.

Isy Suttie Supports the Grand Pavilion Campaign

“Although I do not get as much chance to come back up to Matlock as I'd like, I have many happy memories of the Pavilion both performing there and getting drunk there! I also think it is a beautiful building.”

That’s what Isy said to me when she wrote to me today, I have contacted her and hope that she will send us a letter of support.

Barbeque to thank Supporters

I had a barbeque to thank all those who did so much to help get the grand pavilion ready for Derbyshire Open Arts.
It was great fun and lots of the regular helpers came and enjoyed the evening.
What was better was that some stayed and helped to clear up afterwards!

Matlock Leads!

The Friends of the Grand Pavilion now have more members living in Matlock than in any other town or village! With 244 members this is higher than in Cromford (226) which has led up until now. Since the last update we have put on 168 new members, 52 are living in Matlock.

Almost all of there new members have joined as a result of our Derbyshire Open Arts Event (Pictured).

The rest of this massive increase in membership has come from lots of other places. We are that much closer to 2,000 members now.

Comments and Ideas from the Theatres Trust Conference

These are a few comments that I wrote down from the sessions and the meetings that I had with people afterwards:

·         “Nothing brings out a sense of pride in a town more that an Theatre in the centre of that town” Griff Rhys Jones

·         Many politicians are therefore coming round to the idea of a theatre in the centre of a town.

·         Link to A Younger Theatre (blog)

·         Stratfordrising.com, can we do the same sort of thing?

·         Tara Arts Environmental Policy, get a copy.

·         Elderly People Day centre to fill weekday, daytime use.

·         Sheffield Region Local Enterprise Partnership – get them interested.

·         Re-use any stage floorboards in a public area to keep a connection with those who “trod them”.

·         I spoke to Dame Elizabeth Forger, Chairwoman of the Arts Council.

·         Try the Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation for grants.

·         Organise community events in the Pavilion to build a rapport with each village / community.

·         Louise Page / Christopher Hawes playwrights in Brassington.

·         1000 people give £20 per month, in 4 years you have £1m!

·         Power requirement, we are likely to require a three phase 100 amp.

·         We are likely to require up to 100 dimmers for the theatre and 140 lights!

I have just been to the Theatres Trust Conference "Delivering Sustainable Theatres" Conference in Stratford East. The Keynote Speaker was Griff Rhys Jones (pictured) who said "Nothing brings out the sence of pride in a town more than a theatre in the centre of that town". How true! Gregor

Final Tally of the Derbyshire Open Arts

I’m sure that you will all agree that Derbyshire Open Arts has been an enormous success!

We had exactly 2,000 visitors; we have signed up 152 members, so far, as a result of this event; we have raised nearly £1,000 from these memberships; The Buckets raised £410; the Catalogues have raised £290 so far; The Café has raised £673 gross, with some costs to come off that; The Auction has raised £516; and we will have raised around £1,000 in Grant Aid, once the money is all received. We have also had the most amazing level of publicity. I have linked some of this below.

Derbyshire Open Arts - Final Day the best!

The last day of the exhibition was the best, with 618 today, we got to exactly 2,000 visitors (no fix) for the event. I had signed up 37 members today, so that is 138 overall for the four days, not bad eh! I have not yet counted but I think that this will be around £1,000 in membership subscriptions.

We got over £500 from the auction and £300 from the sale of catalogues. I do not know a total for the buckets or from the café, but we should be around £3,000 in total.

All the artists appear to be very happy with the way that the exhibition went.

Lots of people used the Café and today we will be offering free Tea & Coffee to all visitors.
We signed up 38 new members of the Friends of the Grand Pavilion, bringing the total to 101 for the event so far.....

Pavilion Opens!

115 people crossed the threshold to celebrate the opening of the Grand Pavilion. We had a very successful members night and everyone went away happy.

It has been the best attended event that we have hosted. Derbyshire Open Arts was certainly the most work of any event, to get ready for!

Pollyanna Pickering and Andrew & Rupert Pugh (from the Heights of Abraham) were there, as were the Derby Telegraph, Matlock Mercury and Matlock People reporters.

Matlock People have already done an article and pictures.

Tomorrow we open the doors to the public and hopefully we will get many more visitors crossing the threshold, over the next four days, and enjoying the wonderful art and music being put on display.

Now we can really say that; "we are open".

Meeting with Ann Wright

Yesterday I met with Anne Wright, the Director of Arts from Derbyshire County Council. She has long been a supporter of the project and has sent us a letter of support right at the start. She had however never seen the building! So I showed her around and how the plans will work out.

She was impressed and can see the value of the building to Derbyshire and the Region.
